SEPTEMBER TIM TAG ~ WITH A SPOOKY TWIST

Hello friends!  It's almost the weekend! 

Over at Tim Holtz' blog, he's celebrating Stamptember at Simon Says Stamp with a 20% discount off of all of his stamps.  Gotta check THAT out!

Here is my Tim style tag for September.  It's steampunk with a twist...adding orange alcohol inks to the metallic look and then creating a spooky Halloweenish steampunk theme!

Here's how I did it ...

I started with a #10 manila tag (the new LARGE tag).  I glued "BOO" - letters from Tim Holtz' Grungeblocks and Mixed Minis sets to the tag.  Then I did as Tim did on his tag, cutting pieces of a Metal Foil Sheet and randomly placing them all over the tag.  Then I used a paper stump to press the foil all around the letters, really making them pop and creating a faux embossed look.

Next, I used one of the detail wheels from my Ten Seconds Studios Cool Tools and Tim's Design Ruler to create a soldered look on the tape edges.  I also did Tim's very cool technique of adding indented "rivets" by using a ballpoint pen.  It's on his blog...check it out.  I also added some half pearls in various spots on my tag to create raised "rivets" as well as Tim's indented ones.

I could have done what Tim did and leave the metal background an old weathered aluminum looking finish but I wanted to create a Halloweenish tag.  So, I pounced Sunset Orange and Terra Cotta Alcohol Inks (separately) all over the tag and the "rivets".  Then I added a wash of black paint all over the tag and kept dabbing to remove the excess, adding more paint and dabbing it off until I achieved the look that I wanted.  I added Gold Paint Dabber to "BOO" to make it stand out. 

Here is a more closeup view of the tag.  You can really see the detail of the soldering marks, the rivets and how cool the alcohol inks look on the metal background. I also really like the faux embossed "BOO".  

Now that the background was finished, I just needed to create all of my pieces to put on the tag.  I stamped Tim's Apothecary skull onto manila cardstock that I had rubbed with a Snow Cap Paint Dabber.  Then I covered the skull (other than the eye sockets and teeth) with Crackle Accents.  I cut a rosette out of metal foil that was glued onto a piece of cardstock.  I washed the metal foil with black paint to darken it.  Then I made the rosette as you normally would.  Once dry, I cut it in half and offset stacked one on top of the other.  This created a clown-like collar for my skeleton.  I edged the collar in Paprika Stickles and let it dry.

I covered a plaquette with the significant Halloween number of "31" with Crackle Accents and then added a little Gathered Twig Distress Ink to darken the pearly white finish.  I also added the two words "ALTERED SOUL" from Tim's Chit Chat underneath a Label Pull.  I attached a Swivel Clasp to one side and attached one of Tim's Seasonal Adornments, a scary spider.  It swings freely from the Swivel Clasp.

Here you can see the spider attached to the Swivel Clasp.  I used Tim's Drill Punch to make the hole in the spider to attach a jump ring.  Next I added some little metal Gears to the corner.  The skull is distressed with Gathered Twig Distress Ink to really show all of those cool cracks in his head from the Crackle Accents.  I hot glued the 3D clown style collar in place below the skeleton's head and I hot glued the antique gold Clock Key in place behind my skeleton's head.  Then I added three layers of pop dots and stuck the skull in place. It's very dimensional and looks really cool.

Finally, I just got my new Tim Holtz Tinsel Twine yesterday.  I added a piece of black and a piece of orange from Tim's Autumn Tinsel Twine Set.  That stuff is amazing!  I love it and I'm sure I'll have to have MORE of it!

Oh...and to my friend, Kaz Hall of The Shabby Little Shed...who has "this thing" with mustaches ... 

My skeleton is getting into the act with a pair of Grungeboard Angel wings!!
