VINTAGE SPRINGTIME ~ FRILLY & FUNKIE CHALLENGE

My former Simon Says Stamp and Show Design Team Member, Linda Coughlin; better known as "The Funkie Junkie" has started a new challenge blog called "Frilly and Funkie".  It's a blog for all of you vintage lovers.  This week's them is "Your Favorite Vintage Style".  Just create something and post it to the blog.  Check it out...there are already some really lovely entries.

 Nothing says "Hello Spring" like a bird's nest.  So I combined my love of all things vintage with a bird theme and now I have a new little piece to put up in my shabby chic room.

Here is the piece I created today for Frilly and Funky's FIRST challenge.

It is a little vintage trinket box that opens to reveal a bird's nest.  I colorized the knob with Distress Innks and then covered it with Crackle Accents to make it look more like a crazed porcelain knob.  I sprayed the flowers on top with various color mists and then hot glued them onto the top along with some white Hug Snub Ribbon that I sprayed and crinkled up to make it look old.

The little wooden box has a soft wooden top.  I love that because it opens and closes with ease.  It fastens with an elastic cord over a wooden knob.  I found this little "treasure" at Michaels in their dollar bins.  Those dollar bins are ADDICTING!  I find some of the coolest stuff in those! 

This is what the little wooden box looked like before I covered it.  I covered it with papers from Bo Bunny's Etc. 6x6 paper pack.  Then I distressed them with Broken China and Gathered Twig Distress Inks.  I spritzed the outside paper with Mint and Forever Blue Perfect Pearls Mist.  Then I added the lace trim using a 1/8" double sided tape.

I added some cute Jenni Bowlin Rub Ons that I've had for a long time to the sides and back.

I thought they gave some character to the box.

The interior of the box is also completely finished with distress papers and a stamp of a bird's nest on the top.  I pop dotted some of the images after I'd colorized them with my Distress Markers.

I also sprayed the popped images with Perfect Pearl Perfect Pearls Mist to give them some sheen.

Finally I made a bird's nest in the bottom of the box with some brown excelsior grass and colored two plain paper mache eggs with paint and then some Glimmer Mists, Distress Inks and added some dots with my brown marking pen to make them look more like robin eggs.

TAG .... YOU'RE IT!!!

Good Monday morning everybody!  Time for another Simon Says Stamp and Show Challenge!  This week....Yippee....TAGS!  I love tags!!  Just wait 'til you see the tags that the Design Team has posted to get your creative juices flowing! As always....they're incredible!

Here is my tag for this week ... some quirky, steampunk-ish dimensional fun!  

I'd love to take credit for the "honeycomb" balloon but I can't.  I saw this technique on Shelly Hickox's blog and it blew me away!  Check it out!!  More about it in a minute....

Tag with just Wild Honey and Vintage Photo Distress Stains.

   The background for this tag and the hot air balloon are images from Tim Holtz' new Remnants stamp set.  The second I saw it, I knew I had to have it!  I spritzed a #8 Manila Tag with water and then I colored it with Wild Honey followed by Vintage Photo Distress Stain.

   Next I wiped over the large text image in the stamp set using Jet Black Archival Ink.  I didn't want a real bold, distinct image; rather a more muted one.  So, I applied a bit less ink to the stamp by swiping the ink pad on the surface rather than pouncing the ink pad on the stamp.  Then I added some Broken China Distress Ink around the exterior of the tag a bit of Black Soot Distress Ink around the edges.  I added the numbers running down the left side of the tag from Tim Holtz' Urban Chic stamp set.  That created my background.

Then I followed the directions on Shelly's blog to create the dimensional hot air balloon.  I stamped the balloon image onto white tissue paper using Jet Black Stazon Ink.  I colored the balloon red by using Festive Berries Distress Ink.  It's a great red!  I created the "honeycomb" effect (see Shelly's blog) and laid it to the side.  Next, I stamped the entire hot air balloon image onto a piece of manila cardstock using the Stazon black ink.  I distressed it just a bit with Vintage Photo and Broken China Distress Inks.  The little flag trailing from the balloon is colored using my new Barn Door Distress Marker.  The basket is colored using a Scattered Straw Distress Marker.  I LOVE MY DISTRESS MARKERS!!  (I cannot tell you enough how wonderful they are!)  

I glued a small Game Spinner to the top of the hot air balloon that had been stamped onto the manila cardstock.  I did that BEFORE I glued the honeycomb balloon in place so I had something sturdy to tie my Broken China distressed ribbon to.  Then I glued the dimensional balloon on top of the stamped one and added the little bee charm using wire wrapped around the Game Spinner.

"Admit One" was stamped on manila cardstock using Tim's stamp from his new Warehouse District stamp set.  I cut it out, leaving a long piece on one side that I could glue and stick down inside the honeycomb hot air balloon.  I distressed it with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and a black cats eye ink pad around the edges.  Then I glued the one side down into the honeycomb and allowed the other side to "fly" freely.  

My balloon needed a pilot, so I added one of the three steampunk guys we've come to know and love.  This time I used a smaller image from Tim Holtz' new Warehouse District stamp set.  I gave his face a fleshy tone using a Tattered Rose Distress Marker and a blue shirt with my Broken China Distress Marker.  I added a little light bulb wrapped with wire and attached to the backside of my "pilot".  I wanted it to look like it was floating above his head.  Next, I made a slit at the top of the basket of the balloon and slipped him into place.

The little sign on the left side of the tag is free to swing.  I used the top part of a Grungeboard handle cut from Tim Holtz' Hardware Die Cut.  I pounced it with a Gold followed by a Silver Paint Dabber.  When dry, I lightly distressed it with Black Soot Distress Ink.  I added a large jump ring to either side and a small piece of Lace Chain to each jump ring.  I stamped the sentiment onto a piece of manila cardstock and distressed it using Vintage Photo followed by Black Soot Distress Inks.  I tore the edges and curled them just a bit to add dimension.  Then I pierced two holes at the top, added two small jump rings to connect the chain and the sign.  I glued the hardware piece into place, added the silver brad and the Gear at the top with another little light bulb glued to it.

The Ideaology Flower Garden at the bottom of the tag is done using Tim Holtz' Foliage combined with Memo Pins.  I saw this type of flower on Wendy Vecchi's blog and thought it was so cute!  I stamped "FLY" on manila cardstock that was distressed with Broken China Distress Ink.  Then I placed a Memo Pin on top of each letter, filled the center with Glossy Accents and let them dry.  Then I cut out around them and hot glued them onto a foliage flower.  

Next I created some interest at the bottom of my tag by gathering pleating Tim's Nostalgic Tissue Tape and creating a ruffle.  I first distressed the tape with Broken China Distress Ink and then lightly spritzed it with my own concoction of Sunflower Sparkle Perfect Pearls and Water in a Mini Mister.  I die cut an edging from Tim Holtz' Ornate On The Edge Die Cut out of Grungeboard and colored it with Broken China Distress Ink.  Then, using Tim Holtz' new On The Railroad stamp set, I used the tracks to create stripes.  I draped more of Tim's Lace Chain on top of the edging.  I placed the striped edging over the Tissue Tape and glued it into place using 1/4" Wonder Tape.  I hot glued the tips of the flowers in place underneath the edging and added some quirky wire coils I made.  Finally, I added my dimensional crown underneath the balloon for that perfect dimensional steampunk touch it needed.

SIMON SAYS CREATE A HANDMADE BACKGROUND

It's another Monday and Simon Says "Show Us A Handmade Background".  Once again, I am way out of my comfort zone...COLOR and (for the first time) attempting pages for an ART JOURNAL.  I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing on this but I'm having fun doing it! (smile) 

 

I am still waiting on my new Color Sprays by the lovely and multi talented Dyan Reaveley.  Those little suckers must really be popular! (smile).  I LOVE Dyan Reaveley's techniques and her products!  I wanted to try them for this background challenge, so I improvised on the color sprays with my own concoctions using Distress Reinkers and water in a Mini Mister.  I used Canson's 9x12 Mixed Media paper and folded it in half; creating two pages, 9x6 each.   After I have made several of these, I will create my own Art Journal by binding them together.

This is my first attempt at creating Art Journal Pages.  These are the pages "BEFORE" I added any of Dyan's cute little critters or ladies to them

This is the "AFTER".

As I said, I used a variety of my own concocted color sprays to create the background.  Those colors included:  Spiced Marmalade, Broken China, Worn Lipstick and Mustard Seed Reinkers.  I also used some various stencils I had (because I am waiting on Dyan's stencils) to provide some subtle patterns with the sprays.  I used Sunflower Sparkle Perfect Pearls Mist with stencils to achieve a ghost effect with that subtle iridescence. Then I added different texture with Blank Canvas and Classic Teal Studio Paints. I painted Blank Canvas right onto the harlequin stamp from Dyan's Basic Backgrounds stamp set and randomly stamped it onto the background.  I did the same thing using the polka dot stamp and Classic Teal.

I next used the letters from Dyan's Basic Backgrounds and randomly stamped them onto the background using Jet Black Archival Ink.  Next I added more random stamps from Dyan's Around The Edge and Inbetweenies stamp sets.  The doodling was done with a Sakura Souffle White Pen.  I really like the pen but I wish the tip was finer.

Then I finished these two pages by adding some really cool houses from Right Up Your Street stamp set and...

colorful toad stools from Doolally Dorris.  All images were stamped using Jet Black Archival Ink onto Ranger's FABULOUS NEW STAMPING PAPER.  They were colored with Tim Holtz' New Distress Marker colors:  Mustard Seed, Barn Door, Tumbled Glass, Peeled Paint and Shabby Shutters and Wild Honey.

The sentiments were also stamped on the Specialty Stamping Paper, cut out and then matted on black cardstock.  They are from Quintessential Quotes.  I then used a Posca White Opaque Pen that was give to me, to doodle around the edges.  LOVE this pen!  It has a nice, fine tip and works beautifully!

Here is my next attempt at Art Journal pages:

I used the same basic colors on the background and the images.  These pages are in various stages of completion.

The left side is complete.  Dependable Dotty is the character.  However, because Dyan's stamps are so interchangeable, I had fun creating a whole new character!  I completely changed Dotty's look by replacing the abstract "Always" bird on her head with strands of hair created from a border trim stamp from the Inbetweenies stamp set.  I gave her a different set of legs from the Pondering Petunia stamp set.  I also gave her wings courtesy of the Doolally Dorris stamp set. 

The pendants are from Dyan's Bags of Bunting stamp set and I popped them using Pop Dots.  Instead of using Dyan's sentiments on this page, I journaled my own thoughts in a couple of spots.

From the time I created the first background to creating the second background, I received a partial order of Dyan's stencils.  I used the 9x12 sized Dotted Flower and Letter Jumble stencils in this background.  I added some more Blank Canvas harlequin stamping and some Modern Red Studio Paint polka dots.  This page is still a work in progress...but I think this Art Journaling is going to prove to be very addicting!

ANYTHING GOES-6x6 DRESSFORM

This week, Simon Says "ANYTHING GOES".  This challenge is always fun because your creativity can encompass so many different things: a card, a canvas, a tag, a dimensional piece...truly ANYTHING GOES!  Check out what my amazing Design Teammates have for you this week over at SIMON SAYS STAMP AND SHOW. 

Last week, I went totally feminine shabby chic with the faux crazed bottles.  This week, I am still in the feminine mode but grunging it up a bit!  I chose to play with various Ranger products, especially Sticky Back Canvas, to create this 6x6 board.

First I covered a 6x6 piece of chipboard with Sticky Back Canvas.  I stamped the entire canvas using the script from Tim Holtz' Papillon stamp set.  To add texture, I stamped the script using embossing ink and then I randomly sprinkled three different Distress Embossing Powders over the ink.  Those colors were:  Walnut Stain, Vintage Photo and Black Soot.  I heated them, then as you do with Distress Embossing Powders, I rubbed away the excess powder.  It left a really cool color combination on the canvas and a great gritty texture on my background.

The dress form:  I covered a piece of Grungeboard with Sticky Back Canvas.  Then,using Tim Holtz' Sewing Room die cut, I cut the dress form out of the Grungeboard.  Next I embossed the dress form using Tim Holtz' Bingo Texture Trade.  I lightly wiped the Embossing Ink Pad over the embossed areas of the dress form, sprinkled it with Walnut Stain Distress Embossing Powder and heat set it.  I love the texture and pattern.  I then emboss inked the top knot and stand of the dress form, sprinkled them with Black Soot and heat embossed them.  

To create the skirt, I die cut two of the largest flower from Tim Holtz' Tattered Florals die cut.  I painted one with a Butterscotch Paint Dabber.  I painted the other one with a Terra Cotta Paint Dabber.  When dry, I cut them in half and stamped Tim Holtz' Mini Harlequin, using the embossing ink, sprinkled them with Walnut Stain Embossing Powder and heat set them.  Next I cut the flowers in half and hot glued them to the dress form, creating a skirt effect.  Then I applied Waterfall Stickles to the top of the skirt to add color and also to smoothly transition from the bodice to the skirt.  Then I sprayed one flower and a piece of ribbon from Tim Holtz' Trimmings with my own color spray made from Broken China Reinker, Kiwi Perfect Pearls and water in a Mini Mister.  I attached the flower to the waist and tied the ribbon around the neck to add color and dimension to the dress form.

Next I cut a Mini Baroque out of manila cardstock.  I stamped a portion of the large Fabulous Flourish using Sepia Archival Ink.  Then I covered the baroque with Distress Rock Candy Stickles and let it dry.  Once dry, I wiped it with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and distressed the edges with Gathered Twig and Black Soot. 

The spool labels and the needle book covers are from Tim Holtz' Haberdashery stamp set.  They were stamped and cut out of manila cardstock.  The spool labels were distressed with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  Then I colorized them using Tim Holtz' new Detailer Water Brush and with Wild Honey and Tumbled Glass Distress Stains.  I then glued the spool labels onto a piece of round chipboard that has been colored with Gathered Twig Distress Stain.  This made them look like actual tops of vintage spools.  

The needle book covers were stamped using Stormy Sky Distress Ink and Jet Black Archival Ink.  The one using Stormy Sky was actually made into a little dimensional "book" and distressed with Vintage Photo, edged with a black cats eye ink pad, folded in half and then glued onto the Mini Baroque.  The one stamped in Jet Black Archival Ink was colorized using Stormy Sky, Gathered Twig and a black cats eye ink pad around the edges.  It was also glued into place on the Mini Baroque and then topped with the "vintage spools". 

Memo Pins accent the Mini Baroque.  These were created by stamping "SEW" onto manila cardstock and placing a Memo Pin over each letter.  Then fill the hole with Glossy Accents and wait for it to try.  Once dry, cut the excess cardstock away.  You are left with these really cool little accent pins.  I hot glued them in place. 

The spool was created from Grungeboard that was embossed with Antique Linen Distress Embossing Powder then distressed with Vintage Photo and Black Soot Distress Inks.  I wrapped some black cording around the spool and left enough to wind through three Grungeboard buttons.  The buttons were heat embossed with the following embossing powders:  Stream Adirondak Embossing Powder, Black and White Embossing Powders.   They were distressed with Vintage Photo Distress Ink, the black cord run through each and hot glued in place.

TIM'S TAG ~ MARCH

I love Tim Holtz' mosaic technique that he is featuring on his March rendition of THE TWELVE TAGS.  Check out his blog to see the actual technique...it's fun, easy and much cooler to see in person than in pictures.

Here is my Spring grungy tag that I made using the mosaic technique.  

My background is some left over Pink Paislee Butterfly Garden paper that I had.  It was pale blue with light brown polka dots and book text on it.  Great background!  I altered it by using Picket Fence Distress Stain mixed with my own Broken China Reinker and water spray. I kept layering more Picket Fence until I got the white washed look I was going for.  Then I attached that altered paper on top of a manila tag that I had distressed using Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain and Black Soot Distress Inks.  I stamped a grungy grid background from Tim's Ultimate Grunge stamp set.

Since it's almost Spring, I thought it might be fun to make my tag from Tim Holtz' Spring Sprung stamp set.  It's got the cutest vintage bunny, the butterflies I used to create my mosaic butterflies and some great background stamps.  I stamped the flourish randomly on my tag.  The bunny was a two step stamp process.

I used Tim's fabulous new Broken China and Tumbled Glass Distress Markers to color my bunny's coat right on the stamp.  Then I carefully applied Jet Black Archival Ink to the rest of the stamp.  I stamped it on manila cardstock and it worked perfectly!  Then I colored my bunny's bow and inner ear with Spun Sugar Distress Marker.  His powder puff tail is done with White Flocking with a little glitter mixed in.  He is popped onto the tag using pop dots.

The mosaic butterflies are done according to Tim's directions on his blog.  I used scrap paper from Pink Paislee Butterfly Gardens to create the mosaic "tiles".  One butterfly has darker "grout" than the other one.  That was achieved using a combination of Weathered White and Rust Antiquities Embossing Powder.  The whiter butterfly was done with just Weathered White Antiquities Embossing Powder.  I edged them with a black cats eye, raised their wings and glued them in place.  I like the sentiment "Let Yourself Fly" (from Red Lead Paper Works) and thought it was appropriate for this tag.

The little vintage flowers at the bottom are attached on top of some distressed pink ribbon and two sets of metal leaves from Tim's Foliage Ideaology.  The flowers are made from Pink Paislee Butterfly Garden scraps.  I cut them in a spiral shape using some decorative edged scissors.  I distressed the edges of the paper and then rolled them into their flower shape, shaped them, glued them and hot glued them in place on the tag.

BOTTLE IT!!!

This week Simon Says Stamp and Show says "Bottle It!"  I had recently seen this really cool Faux Crazed Glass Technique Video on Wendy Vecchi's blog and wanted to try it!  What a perfect opportunity to use that technique for this week's challenge!!

With this technique, you can take inexpensive clear glass bottles and turn them into little works of art!

Here are my finished bottles.  I love them and they will look perfect in my shabby chic guest room.

Clear glass Faux Crazed bottles colorized with Magenta Hue, Coffee and Aquamarine Archival Ink.  Then lightly brushed over (and wiped off) with Frayed Burlap Distress Stain to add the brown antiqued tones.

 I found these regular glass bottles at a local craft and hobby store and bought them to try this technique.  They originally were just clear glass and had a cork in the tops of them.  I first brushed on a thin coat of Matte Glue N Seal over all of the exteriors of the bottles and let that dry.  Next I brushed a liberal coat of Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint over each of the bottles; purposely made a run or two here or there for added texture on the bottles.  Then the hard part....waiting for it to dry!!!

It didn't take THAT long (only an hour or so) but it seemed like forever when you're excited to see if the technique really works as beautifully as Wendy's did!  IT WORKED!!!!  I had three beautifully crackle distressed clear glass bottles.  

I wanted them to be tinted like old vintage glass.  So, I added Magenta Hue Archival Ink to a piece of Cut N Dry Foam and lightly rubbed it over the square bottle.  The round bottle was colored using Coffee Archival Ink.  The third bottle became teal by added Aquamarine Archival Ink.   Then I brushed on (and wiped away the excess) of Frayed Burlap Distress Stain to each bottle.  That added the rich brown tones in some of the cracks.

  
Here is a closeup of view of the color and texture of the teal bottle before I decorated it.

Let the decorating begin!  On the amber colored bottle, I first found a vintage label that I liked and sized it to fit my bottle.  Then I distressed it using Vintage Photo Distress Ink and edged with a black cats eye ink pad.  I centered the label on the bottle and glued it in place using Matte Multi Medium.  Next I added a piece of vintage lace trim with a piece of 1/8" double sided Wonder Tape.  

For the upper portion of my bottle, I gathered some vintage lace on a cream thread and tied it around the neck of the bottle.  I draped some antique gold chain and hot glued it in place.  The chain dangles free in between where I glued it and I love that!

To hide where I glued the chain to the bottle, I added some small flowers that were white.  But first, I wanted them pink-ish; so I sprayed them with Vintage Pink Glimmer Mist followed by a light spritz of Vanilla Breeze Glimmer Mist to brown them up just a tad.  Then I hot glued them in place.  

I didn't want an ugly old cork to be the topper for my new shabby chic bottles.  So, I went to the craft and hobby store and found crystal knobs (drawer pulls) that worked perfectly for pretty bottle toppers! I screwed them down into the corks and decorated some of them more than others on the bottles.

Here is my bottle topper on the first bottle.  I think it looks perfect without any added embellishments.  And it happened to be an amber color already.

Here is the first bottle that I attempted.  I really loved the way it turned out.

The second bottle I made was the teal one.

This label was actually a combination of two labels for cigar boxes.  I used the background of one label and then cut out the beautiful vintage lady from a different one and combined them to create my own shabby chic label.  I think she is beautiful.  I love the gold-ish background against the teal and the lady, holding the teal-ish feather could not have been more perfect for this bottle!  I inked around her edges with a black cats eye ink pad and then glued her in place using Matte Multi Medium.  I edged the gold label with Platinum Stickles to make it pop even more.  I cut apart some vintage lace, dyed it in some coffee, dried it, added 1/8" double sided tape and wrapped it around the bottle.

I embellished the lace with some white pearl trim that I had.  Before I added the pearls to the lace, I added some color using a combination of Shell Pink and Mountain Rose Alcohol Inks.  

I added a piece of vintage lace to the bottom of the bottle with 1/8" double sided tape.

The teal bottle top is a pink crystal knob (drawer pull) with vintage lace gathered around it as well as the top of the bottle.  I added some cream thin ribbon and some little mini white flowers that were sprayed with a mixture of Worn Lipstick Distress Reinker and Water.  I hot glued them all into place.

My final bottle is the pinkish one.  

I loved the little girl holding the nest on this label but it was for a chocolate product...not a perfume.  Still, I loved the design, so I used it anyway and covered up the chocolate part of the label with lace.

I added a bit of "vintage" lace to the bottom of the bottle and added a few more of my alcohol inked pearls.

I added two different pieces of vintage lace to the top of this bottle.  Then a bit more chain that was run through the lace and wired in place.  I added more little flowers; this time light blue to accent the blue in the label.

To the front of the bottle, I added a butterfly charm left over from last year's Pink Paislee's Butterfly Garden collection and a couple of Chain Tassels on the end of the chain.

The round knob (drawer pull) on this bottle is clear crystal.  I added a little bow around it and a charm made out of Tim Holtz' crystal Baubles, a little 7 Gypsies Key and a small teardrop shaped Facet that was alcohol inked with Stream and Caramel Alcohol Inks.

This was NOT a difficult technique.  Try it!!  You will LOVE the results!
